infantry

/ˈɪnfəntɹi/ noun B1

**Infantry** refers to soldiers who fight on foot, the foot‑soldier branch of an army. Historically they marched in close formation, bearing muskets or swords, and they remain the backbone of land warfare today. Modern infantry moves in squads, rides in trucks or armored personnel carriers to the battlefield, then dismounts to engage the enemy with rifles, grenades and sometimes light artillery. They are trained for a variety of terrain—from urban streets to jungle trails—and often cooperate with armor, artillery and air support to seize and hold ground. The term also appears in phrases like infantry division to denote a large formation of foot‑soldiers.

Word Origin Infantry comes from Italian infanteria, from infante 'youth, foot soldier', which goes back to Latin infantem 'one who does not speak' (in- 'not' + fari 'to speak'). So infantry originally meant 'a body of young foot soldiers', but the root is literally 'non-speakers'. The same root fari gives us fable, fabulous, affable, confess, and profess. The PIE root *bha- means 'to speak'.
