flooding

/ˈfɫədɪŋ/ noun

An act of flooding; a flood or gush.

Word Origin Flood comes from Old English flōd, from a root meaning 'to flow, float' — the same PIE root *pleu- that gives us flow, float, fleet, and even Pluto (from Greek ploutos 'wealth,' originally 'abundance flowing'). Flooding is the act of water overflowing. The root also gives us floodgate (a gate for flood control) and floodplain (the plain that gets flooded). So flooding is a flowing over.
