Word Origin Decentralism is built from de- 'away from' and center, from Greek 'kentron' meaning a sharp point or the stationary point of a compass—the center. So decentralism is the ideology of moving away from a central point. The same Greek root gives us eccentric (out of center) and concentric (having the same center). The PIE root *kent- meant to prick or point, which is why a center is the 'prick' point.
