Word Origin From Greek kentron 'sharp point' — originally the fixed point of a compass, then the center of a circle. That's why centralism is the idea of concentrating power at a single center. The root centr- gives us 'center,' 'central,' 'eccentric' (off-center), and 'concentrate' (bring together to a center). The PIE root *kent- meant 'to prick, point,' so you can almost see the compass point.
