sylph

/ˈsɪɫf/ noun C1

a graceful girl

Word Origin Sylph is a blend of Latin silva 'forest' and nympha 'nymph' — a spirit of the air, coined by the alchemist Paracelsus. The idea: a woodland nymph of the air. The same silva root gives us sylvan (wooded), silviculture (forestry). Nymph gives us nymphomania.
