stratospheric

/ˌstɹætəsˈfɪɹɪk/ adj

**Stratospheric** describes something that reaches the stratosphere, the layer of atmosphere above the weather. It also means extremely high, especially in price or altitude. When you call a price stratospheric, you suggest it soars far above ordinary levels, like a budget airline ticket that costs more than a small car. The word works well for anything that can be imagined as soaring—temperatures, ambitions, or egos—provided the comparison evokes great height or scale.

Word Origin Stratospheric combines Latin stratus 'spread out, layered' and Greek sphaira 'sphere' — the stratosphere is the 'layered sphere' of the atmosphere. Stratus also gives us stratovolcano (layered volcano) and street (via strata 'paved road'). Sphere gives us atmosphere, hemisphere, and biosphere.
