resoluteness

/ˈɹɛzəˌɫutnəs/ noun

The state or characteristic of being resolute; determination or resolution.

Word Origin Resoluteness is the quality of being resolute — determined, unyielding. Resolute comes from Latin resolutus, past participle of resolvere 'to loosen, release'. The re- prefix intensifies, so resolute originally meant 'released, free' but shifted to 'determined' because a resolute person is free from doubt. The same solvere gives us solve (loosen a problem), dissolve (loosen apart), and absolute (loosened from all constraints).
