Word Origin Purpose is from Old French 'porpos' (aim, intention), from Latin 'pro-' (forth) + 'ponere' (to put) — so putting forth an aim. Repurpose means to put forth again for a new aim. The 'ponere' root gives us propose, position, compose, dispose, and expose.
