ostentatiously

/ˌɑstənˈteɪʃəsɫi/ adv

In an ostentatious manner; extravagantly or flamboyantly.

Word Origin Ostentatiously comes from Latin 'ostendere', to stretch out in front for display — 'ob-' (before) + 'tendere' (to stretch). So ostentatious behavior is stretching yourself out to be noticed. The '-ous' makes it an adjective, and '-ly' an adverb. The same 'tendere' root gives us 'extend', 'intend', 'pretend' (stretch forward in imagination), and 'tension'. Doing something ostentatiously is doing it with a lot of showy stretching.
