impiety

/aɪɪti/ noun B2

lack of reverence

Word Origin Impiety is the opposite of piety — from Latin impietas, with im- 'not' and pietas 'dutifulness, piety.' The root pius meant 'dutiful to the gods and family.' The same root gives us pious, impious, expiation (making amends, atoning), and pitiful (full of pity, which originally meant piety).
