pietism

/ˈpitɪzəm/ noun C1

deep religious devotion

Word Origin From Latin pius 'dutiful, devout'. Pietism is a 17th-century religious movement emphasizing personal piety. The root pius gives us piety, pious, impious, and expiate (to make amends, from ex- + piare 'to appease'). Interestingly, pity comes from the same root via Old French pité, originally meaning 'piety, compassion'. So pietism is literally 'devout-ism'.
