declassify

/dɪˈkɫæsəˌfaɪ/ verb

to remove the classification from; to lift the restrictions on

Word Origin Classify comes from Latin classis 'class' and facere 'to make' — to make classes. Declassify adds de- 'away from', so it's literally 'un-making' the secret classification. The root classis originally meant a group called up (for military service), and gives us classic, classical, and classification. So declassify is taking something out of the secret group.
