Word Origin From Latin providere, literally 'to see forward' — pro- 'ahead' and videre 'to see.' When you make provisions, you're looking ahead to prepare, so provisionally means 'in a way that looks ahead but isn't final.' The root videre gives us vision, visible, and video, all about seeing, while pro- also appears in prologue (words before) and prospect (looking forward).
