prototypic

/pɹˌoʊɾoʊtˈɪpɪk/ adj

Of or pertaining to a prototype; prototypical

Word Origin Prototypic comes from 'prototype', which is Greek 'prōtos' 'first' and 'typos' 'model, impression'. 'Typos' originally meant a blow or strike, then the mark left by a blow, then a model or type. So a prototype is the first model, and prototypic means characteristic of that first model. The same roots give us type, typical, typography, and protocol (first glue, i.e., first sheet). The PIE root *(s)teu- 'to strike' also yields 'steep' and 'stoop'.
