ostracize

/ˈɔstɹəˌsaɪz/ verb B2

to exclude someone from a group

Word Origin Ostracize comes from Greek ostrakon 'potsherd' — in ancient Athens, citizens would vote to banish someone by writing their name on a piece of broken pottery. So to ostracize is literally to 'potsherd' someone, to exclude them. The same root gives us oyster (from its shell) and osteology (study of bones).
