lung

/ˈɫəŋ/ noun A1, B1

**Lung** is the spongy organ that swaps carbon dioxide for fresh oxygen, letting us gasp, sprint, and argue about the meaning of life. It also describes a person’s stamina, the breath that fuels a jog or a marathon. In a poetic sense, a forest or park becomes a lung, exhaling clean air into a city. In geology, a lung is a stone shaped like a lung, and in old dialects it can mean a gentle curve or bend in a road.

Word Origin Lung comes from Proto-Germanic *lungōn-, which goes back to PIE *lengʷ- 'light, not heavy.' That's because lungs are the light organs — they float in water, unlike the liver or heart. The same root gives us light (not heavy) and lights (an old word for lungs). So your lungs are literally 'the light ones.'
