inconsistent

/ˌɪnkənˈsɪstənt/ adjective

not always the same or not following a regular pattern

Word Origin Consistent comes from Latin consistere 'to stand together, be firm,' from con- 'together' + sistere 'to set, stand.' Consistent means standing together, not contradictory. Inconsistent is the opposite. The root sistere (from stare 'to stand') gives us exist (stand out), insist (stand on), persist (stand through), resist (stand back), and assist (stand by). So inconsistent means not standing together.
