hydrogen

/ˈhaɪdɹədʒən/ noun B1, C1

**Hydrogen** is the lightest element, a colorless, odorless gas that lives at atomic number one on the periodic table. In nature it pairs up as H₂, a molecule so tiny it could hide in a dust mote. Hydrogen fuels stars, powers rockets, and joins with oxygen to make water. Its eagerness to bond makes it a chemical workhorse, and its low weight lets it lift balloons. Engineers also tap its energy in fuel cells, hoping its abundance can power a cleaner world.

Word Origin From Greek 'hudōr' (water) and 'genes' (born) — hydrogen is literally 'water-born' because when it burns, it produces water. The same 'hydro' root gives us 'hydrant', 'dehydrate', and 'hydraulic'. The 'gen' root is everywhere: 'generate', 'gene', 'genesis', and also in 'oxygen' (acid-born) and 'nitrogen' (niter-born). The PIE roots *wed- (water) and *gene- (give birth) connect to 'wet' and 'kin'.
