armament

/ˈɑɹməmənt/ noun B2

**Armament** refers to the weapons, ammunition and other military gear that a country, unit or ship carries. It is the tangible hardware that turns a calm harbor into a potential battlefield. The term can also denote the totality of a nation’s fighting resources, from tanks to missiles. Beyond the literal, armament can be spoken of in collective or singular form, as in naval armament or the armament of a brigade. The word also covers the act of equipping forces, so a government may increase its armament during a crisis. In figurative use, any collection of tools that prepares one for conflict—political, legal or rhetorical—may be labeled an armament.

Word Origin From Latin 'arma' meaning 'weapons, equipment' — armament is the collective equipment of war. The root 'arm-' gives us 'army', 'armor', and 'alarm' (originally 'to arms!'). The suffix '-ment' indicates a concrete result or means. So armament is literally 'the means of arming'.
