dogmatism

/ˈdɑɡməˌtɪzəm/ noun B2

stubborn opinions

Word Origin Dogmatism is the tendency to lay down opinions as undeniably true, and it comes from Greek dogma 'opinion, decree', from dokein 'to seem'. The idea is something that seems right to you. The same root gives us paradox (contrary to opinion), orthodox (right opinion), and even doctor (originally a teacher of accepted knowledge). So dogmatism is about sticking to what seems true, sometimes too rigidly.
