undifferentiated

/əndɪfɝˈɛnʃiˌeɪtɪd/ adj

Not differentiated, not different, alike.

Word Origin Undifferentiated means not yet made different. The root is Latin differre 'to carry apart' — to distinguish. The same root gives us differ, different, and even aquifer (water-carrier). The prefix un- negates it, so undifferentiated cells haven't yet been 'carried apart' into distinct types.

adj Not differentiated, not different, alike.

The cells in the early embryo are still undifferentiated and can develop into any tissue.
