shelling

/ˈʃɛɫɪŋ/ noun

An artillery bombardment.

Word Origin Shelling comes from a root meaning 'to cut, split' — because a shell is something that's been split off, a hard outer covering. The PIE *skel- also gives us scale, scalp, and even skill (originally 'to separate, discern'). So shelling is literally removing that outer layer, like peeling away a protective husk.
