sapless

/ˈsæpləs/ adj

Lacking vivacity.

Word Origin From Old English 'sæp' 'sap, juice' and '-leas' 'without' — so sapless is literally 'without sap', dry and lifeless. The same 'sap' root gives us 'sappy' (full of sap, sentimental), 'sapling' (a young tree full of sap), and 'sap' as a verb (to drain energy). The suffix -less is from PIE *leu- 'to loosen, divide'.
