fortifier

/ˈfɔɹtəˌfaɪɝ/ noun

One who fortifies.

Word Origin From Latin fortis 'strong' + -ify 'to make' + -er 'one who' — a fortifier is someone who makes strong. The root fortis gives us fort (a stronghold), fortitude (strength of mind), and force (strength applied). The PIE *bhergh- 'high, strong' also gives us burg and borough (fortified towns). Comfort and effort also come from fortis: comfort is 'with strength' (to strengthen), effort is 'out of strength.'
