disputer

/dis.py.te/ noun

One who disputes.

Word Origin From Latin dis- 'apart' and putare 'to reckon, think' — so to dispute is literally 'to think apart', to have separate reckonings. The root putare originally meant 'to prune' (trimming plants), then shifted to 'reckon, think' (pruning thoughts). That's why we have compute (reckon together), repute (think again, reputation), impute (attribute), and even amputate (prune away a limb). A disputer is someone who prunes your arguments apart.
