cultist

/ˈkəɫtəst/, /ˈkəɫtɪst/ noun

A member of a cult.

Word Origin Cultist comes from Latin 'colere', which meant both to till the soil and to worship — the idea being that worship is a kind of cultivation of the gods. That's why we have cultivate and culture from the same root. A cult originally just meant a system of worship, but the negative sense of a fringe group developed later. The -ist suffix denotes a follower. The PIE root *kwel- also gives us cycle and wheel, from the turning of the seasons in agriculture.
