commiseration

/kəmˌɪsɚɹˈeɪʃən/ noun C1

pity

Word Origin Commiseration is feeling pity together with someone — literally 'miserating with'. It comes from Latin com- 'together' and miser 'wretched'. The root miser gives us miserable, misery, and even miser (a stingy person, originally a wretched one). So commiseration is shared wretchedness, a word that still carries the weight of suffering.
