aspirer

/as.pi.ʁe/ noun

One who aspires to something.

Word Origin From Latin ad- 'to' and spirare 'to breathe' — literally 'breathe toward.' To aspire is to breathe your hopes toward a goal. An aspirer is someone who does that. The same root spirare gives us inspire (breathe in), expire (breathe out), conspire (breathe together), and spirit (the breath of life). The PIE root *speis- 'to blow' also underlies spume and spout.
