ankylosis

/ˌæn.kɪˈloʊ.sɪs/ noun C1

a condition in which bones become fused together, often at a joint, causing stiffness and immobility

Word Origin Ankylosis comes from Greek 'ankylos' meaning 'crooked, bent, stiff' and the suffix '-osis' meaning 'condition'. It's a medical term for stiffening of a joint. The same root gives us ankle (the bent joint), anchor (a bent hook), angle (a bent line), and ankylosaur (the 'stiff lizard' dinosaur). The PIE root *ank- meant 'to bend'. So ankylosis is literally a condition of being bent stiff.
