transference

/tɹænsˈfɝəns/ noun B2

**Transference** is the phenomenon where emotions, desires, or expectations attached to someone from your past get projected onto a new person, often your therapist. It can also mean the movement of something from one place to another, like heat or data. When a client calls their therapist “parent” or feels irrational anger toward them, they are experiencing transference, a useful clue for uncovering unresolved issues. Therapists watch for it, because it reveals the hidden script we replay in adult life. In non‑psych contexts the term is simply a neutral label for a shift of material or information, as in electrical transference or financial transference.

Word Origin Transference is the act of carrying across — from Latin transferre, trans- 'across' and ferre 'to bear'. The root ferre is incredibly prolific: it gives us refer (carry back), prefer (carry before), confer (carry together), and even ferry (a boat that carries). The PIE root *bher- also yields fertile (bearing fruit) and even birth.
