soot

/ˈsʊt/ noun C1

**Soot** is the fine, black‑brown dust that sneaks out when coal or oil burns without enough air, the kind that makes chimney sweeps' coats look fashionable. As a verb it means to smear that dusty coating onto something, and in older slang it can mean to seize or clutch firmly. Agricultural historians also used the term for the act of sowing seed and for the early stage of grain growth, when seedlings are just a dust of life.

Word Origin Soot is what settles after a fire — from PIE *sed- 'to sit, settle.' The same root gives us sediment, session, settle. Sooty and sootiness are derived. The idea of settling is key.
