/wɛft/ noun C1**Weft** is the collection of threads that run horizontally across a piece of fabric, crossing the lengthwise, or warp, threads. In weaving the weft is shuttled back and forth to interlace with the warp, giving the cloth its body. The weft may be made of a different material or thickness than the warp, allowing designers to vary texture, weight, or color in a single weaving. Writers sometimes borrow the term to describe a secondary strand that holds a larger structure together, such as the weft of a narrative that ties together its main plotlines.
