Word Origin From Latin asserere 'to claim, declare' — literally 'to join oneself to' (ad- 'to' + serere 'to join'). To assert is to state firmly, as if linking yourself to the statement. Reassertion is asserting again. The root ser- 'to join' gives us series (things joined in a line), insert (to join into), and exert (to join out, put forth). The PIE root *ser- 'to line up, join' is also in desert (unjoined, abandoned).
