obtuseness

/ɑbˈtusnəs/ noun

The quality of being obtuse.

Word Origin Obtuse comes from Latin obtusus, past participle of obtundere 'to beat against, blunt,' from ob- 'against' and tundere 'to beat.' So obtuseness literally means 'the state of being beaten blunt' — dulled, not sharp. The same root tundere gives us contusion (a bruise, from beating together). Obtuseness is a great example of how a physical action (pounding something dull) became a mental trait (slow to understand).
