neolithic

/ˈnioʊˌɫɪθɪk/ noun C1

the New Stone Age

Word Origin Neolithic means 'new stone' age—the later part of the Stone Age with polished stone tools. Neo- 'new' (as in neologism 'new word') and lithos 'stone' (as in monolith 'single stone' and paleolithic 'old stone'). So neolithic is literally the 'new stone' era, contrasting with the older paleolithic.
