miscomprehend

/mɪskˌɑmpɹihˈɛnd/ verb

To misunderstand.

Word Origin From Latin comprehendere, literally 'to grasp together' — com- 'together' + prehendere 'to seize.' To comprehend is to mentally grasp. Mis- adds 'wrongly,' so miscomprehend means to grasp incorrectly, to misunderstand. The root prehendere gives us apprehend (seize toward), reprehend (seize back, blame), and prehensile (able to grasp). So miscomprehend is literally 'wrongly grasp together.'
