To adjust wrongly or unsuitably.

Word Origin Adjust comes from Latin 'adjuxtare' 'to bring near' — ad- 'to' + juxta 'near'. So to adjust is to make something fit closely, and misadjust means to adjust badly. The root juxta also gives us juxtapose (place near). The mis- prefix from Old French means 'badly, wrongly'. Related: adjustment, adjustable, and also justice (from 'jus' 'law', connected via PIE *yeug- 'to join'). So adjust and justice both come from the idea of joining or fitting.
