Word Origin From Latin apprehendere 'to seize, grasp' — so apprehensive is literally 'grasping' mentally. Add the prefix in- 'not' and you get someone who just isn't getting it, not mentally seizing the idea. The same root prehendere gives us comprehend (grasp together), apprehend (seize), and even prison (a place where you're seized).
