germless

/ˈdʒɝmləs/ adj

Free from germs.

Word Origin Germ originally meant 'sprout' or 'bud' — the idea of something tiny that grows. That's why we have germinate (to sprout) and germicide (sprout-killer). The word germ for microbe came later, from the idea of a tiny seed of disease. So germless literally means 'without sprouts' — free of those little growing things. The same root *gene- gives us genetic, progeny, and congenital (born with). The suffix -less is from Old English 'lēas' meaning 'devoid of', so germless is 'devoid of germs'.
