erectness

/ɪˈɹɛktnəs/ noun

The state of being erect, or of having an erect posture.

Word Origin From Latin 'erigere' meaning 'to set up' — literally 'to make stand straight'. The root 'regere' (to rule, keep straight) is the same one that gives us 'direct', 'correct', and 'rectangle' (a shape with straight angles). So erectness is the quality of being upright, both physically and metaphorically. The PIE root *h3reg- meant 'to move in a straight line', which also gave us 'regal' (kingly, ruling) — because a ruler keeps things straight.
