emaciated

/ɪˈmeɪʃiˌeɪtɪd/ adj C1

extremely thin, often from starvation or illness

Word Origin Emaciated comes from Latin emaciare 'to make thin,' from ex- 'out' and macer 'thin' — literally 'thinned out,' wasted away. The same root gives us meager (thin, scant) and macerate (to soften by soaking, originally to make lean). The PIE root *mak- meant 'long and thin,' so emaciated describes a body that has been stretched thin by starvation or illness. You can almost see the gaunt figure.
