distinguishingly

/dɪˈstɪŋɡwɪʃɪŋli/ adv

With distinction; with some mark of preference.

Word Origin From Latin distinguere, literally 'to prick apart' — the idea is separating things by marking them with a point. Distinguishingly is doing something in a way that sets it apart. The root stinguere also gives us extinguish (put out, originally 'prick out' a fire) and instinct (an inner 'pricking' or impulse). The dis- prefix 'apart' is the same as in discern and discriminate.
