contested

/kənˈtɛstəd/ adj C1 ✓

Controversial; contentious; debated.

Word Origin From Latin contestari 'to call to witness', from con- 'together' + testari 'to bear witness'. In Roman law, both parties would call witnesses together, hence a contest. The -ed makes it past tense. The root testis 'witness' literally means 'third person', from tri- 'three' — a third party standing by. This root gives us testify, testimony, testament, protest, detest, attest. So contested means having been called into dispute with witnesses.
