To remove something from a mold.

Word Origin Mold comes from Latin modulus 'small measure, mold' — the idea of a form that shapes something. Un- here is the reversative prefix: to unmold is to take something out of its mold. The same root modulus gives us model, module, modify, and modest (originally 'keeping within measure'). Un- can mean 'not' or 'reverse,' as in untie, unlock.
