unallied

/ʌnˈælaɪd/ adj

Not allied.

Word Origin From Latin ad- 'to' and ligare 'to bind' — so an ally is someone bound to you. Unallied means not bound together. The same root ligare gives us alliance, reliable (able to be bound to), obligation (a binding duty), and ligament (a binding tissue). The PIE root *leig- 'to bind' also underlies league and lien.

adj Not allied.
