tapeworm

/ˈteɪpˌwɝm/ noun B2

**Tapeworm** is a flat, ribbon‑like parasite that lives in the guts of vertebrates, most famously humans. It consists of a head that latches onto the intestinal wall and a chain of segments that grow longer the longer it feeds. The creature obtains all its sustenance by absorbing digested food directly through its skin, so the host ends up losing nutrients and often experiences abdominal discomfort, weight loss, or a peculiar feeling of something slithering inside. Tapeworms can stretch to several meters, making them the ultimate unwelcome guests at a buffet. In everyday speech the word sneaks in to describe any long, draining presence—a never‑ending conference call, for instance, can be called a tapeworm of a meeting.

Word Origin Tapeworm is a vivid compound: tape from the flat, ribbon-like shape of the parasite, and worm. The word tape itself originally meant a narrow strip of cloth, and you can see that in tapestry (woven fabric). So a tapeworm is literally a worm that looks like a strip of tape. Related: earthworm, silkworm, hookworm — all descriptive compounds.
