perceptivity

/pɚsɪptˈɪvᵻɾi/ noun

The state or quality of being perceptive.

Word Origin From Latin per- 'through' and capere 'to take' — literally 'the quality of taking through thoroughly.' The root capere gives us capture, captive, capacity, and capable. The PIE root *kap- 'to grasp' also appears in have, heave, and hawk. So perceptivity is a great example of how 'seizing' became a metaphor for understanding, and the per- prefix intensifies it to 'thorough grasping'.
