Word Origin Absorb comes from Latin ab- 'from' and sorbere 'to suck in, swallow' — literally 'suck away from.' So absorbent materials are those that can suck up liquids. Nonabsorbent simply means 'not able to suck in.' The same root sorbere also gives us adsorb (suck onto) and desorb (suck off), and even the word sorbet, originally a drink that you 'sip' or 'suck.'
