mistrustfully

/mɪˈstɹəsfəɫli/ adv

In a mistrustful manner.

Word Origin Trust comes from Old Norse traust 'confidence, protection', and mis- adds 'wrongly'. So mistrust is wrong trust, suspicion. Mistrustfully is doing something with that suspicion. The same root traust gives us trusty, trustee, entrust, and distrust. The PIE root *deru- meant 'firm, solid' — like a tree, which is why trust feels solid.
