Word Origin The root is Latin filius 'son' — so affiliation is literally 'adopting as a son,' joining a group as if into a family. Disaffiliation is the process of leaving that family-like group. The prefix dis- means 'apart, away,' and af- is from ad- 'to.' Filial (pertaining to a son) and affiliate (to adopt) share the root. So disaffiliation is un-sonning yourself from an organization.
